Lester Matlock started his real estate career in 1934 and built several hundred homes in El Dorado, Emporia, Garden City, and Augusta, Kansas. He also developed many housing additions in Wichita and built homes in Longview, Texas before coming to Junction City in 1959.

Russell Johnson was born and raised in Junction City and joined his stepfather, Lester Matlock, in business in 1964 while attending Kansas State University.

Working together until Mr. Matlock's death in 1990, they built MATLOCK JOHNSON into the leading real estate company in the midwest. The company has undertaken numerous developments in Junction City, including the building of Westwood Heights Second Addition, Lawndale Plaza Addition, Rolling Hills Subdivision, South-view and Riverview Heights Additions, to mention a few. The company has worked with a number of the nation's largest retailers in a seven state area. Locally, Cedar Point Place Shopping Center is continuing to develop and now houses a John Q. Hammons Convention Center and Marriott Courtyard, Walmart Super Center, Taco Bell, Blockbuster Video, Texaco Travel Center, Holiday Inn Express, Cracker Barrel, Family Buffet. Ash Street Extension is well underway, offering high visability sites, Beacon Marine Sales with a +- 6 acre boat demonstration lake and Valu Place Motel are open with other entities to be announced in the near future.

The firm is known throughout the Midwest for its development of numerous Wal-Mart stores as well as Target, Office Depot and Sam’s Clubs, to mention a few.

After a brief illness Russell M. Johnson unexpectedly passed away on November 26th, 2005. After the death of Russell M. Johnson, the company was taken over by Scott Johnson, nephew of Mr. Johnson. Shortly thereafter the Commercial Office located at 514 N. Eisenhower Dr. was closed and both Residential and Commercial divisions have been combined and are now located at 801 W. 6th Street in Junction City, KS.
